I know I've mentioned this before, but it is such a crazy reality for me that it bears repeating! My life is so busy! :-) I know, join the club right? One thing that I have noticed is that the busier my life gets, the more chaotic my planner seems! Since I bought my first planner years ago, I have used a "dashboard" of sorts. In fact, I used one before I even know that it was called a dashboard! Heee!
Usually, I use it as a place to put sticky notes, clip receipts or other items that need to be put away or used soon, and even to attach a photo or two. Since I've been using the Moments Inked Planner System I have been laminating mine to make it easier to release the sticky notes. With the dies that cut the spiral edge, it can be easily inserted into the binding coil.
If you look around the internet, you will find all sorts of dashboards! Some are very cluttered with sticky note pads, extra clips, accessories, and all sorts of decorations. Personally, I like a clean and streamlined look as I have found it to be more functional for me. That doesn't mean I don't like to dress it up a bit though! I also like to create my dashboards smaller than the actual planner page since I insert it smack in the middle of my upcoming week. Normally, I use the largest die in the Moments Inked: Basic Pages Die Set as it's the perfect size for this!
To conquer the chaos that my dashboard was becoming, I created a custom dashboard. One that still has the laminated top that I love so much, but folds out to reveal a pocket and another page! Before I laminated the top, I added the die cut month (I used the Monthly Moments: Year Round 1 Die Set.
The little pocket is the perfect place to stuff all of those little things that end up stuffed in between my pages. In fact, right now I have the receipt for some items that I need to take back to a store, a camp flyer for my boys that needs to be filled out this week, and a list of some fundraising items my son needs for his upcoming mission trip all safely tucked inside!
Here's a close up of the photo of my youngest I added to the inside page! I stamped the Favorite Photo sentiment (from the Moments Inked: Remembered stamp set) below the photo.
To go along with the "Blessed" die cut (from the Counting My Blessings die set), I stamped one of the verses from the stamp set A Cheerful Heart. This one in particular is one that I need a daily reminder on! :-)
So now that I've showed you my custom dashboard, I put together a few photos and some instructions so that you can create your own! I used a darker cardstock on the example below so that it would show up better in the photos. As always, if you want a closer look, just click on any of the photos and they will pop up larger!
To start, you will need the following pieces of cardstock and patterned paper:
- 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" piece of cardstock, scored at 4" vertically
- 4" x 6 1/2" piece of cardstock
- 7 7/8" x 5" piece of patterned paper, scored at 3 7/8" vertically & 3" horizontally
To cut down on unneeded bulk, I cut out the bottom piece (after scoring it is the rectangle that measures 4" x 2", not the one that measures 3 7/8" x 2").
Place the rectangle without any adhesive onto the smaller size of your cardstock (the side that measures 4" x 6 1/2") and wrap the adhesive parts around and underneath the cardstock to create a pocket. (Note: I rounded the corner on the pocket flap as I think it gives it a nice finished look.)
For the finishing touch, close your dashboard and add the extra piece of cardstock (it measures 4" x 6 1/2") to cover up the pack of the pocket. This is the dashboard front. This is the piece that I always laminate. If you are going to laminate yours, make sure to decorate it first!
Finally, use the Moments Inked: Edged Die on the larger flap of your dashboard to create the spiral edge.
If you create your own custom dashboard, please share it! You can use the tag #papertreyink and #momentsinked!
